What is a Reserve Officer?

St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Posse members are reserve officers. A reserve officer is a part-time or volunteer law enforcement officer who serves in a supplementary capacity to full-time officers. Our reserve officers are sworn peace officers with the same legal authority as regular police officers when activated and on-duty.

Most posse members have full-time jobs outside of law enforcement, and they contribute their time and skills to support the St. Joe County Police Department and other local departments. Training is similar to regular officers, and our members are held to the same standards of professionalism and accountability.

The height of the horse and the visibility it provides to the officer can help to deter crowd disturbances and assist in monitoring crowds.

The unique and highly visible method of mounted police patrol always receives wide and positive public attention and support.

The community views mounted officers as more approachable. Breaking down barriers helps improve the partnership between the police and the community.
